• 5 Ways To Celebrate National Barbershop Quartet Day

Tues., Apr. 11 is National Barbershop Quartet Day, and you may have recently seen CBS This Morning with Deke Sharon, James Corden and Neil Patrick Harris channelling Broadway, NBC’s TODAY show featuring “Instant Classic” during 2016 Internationals, and/or the 2016 Fox & Friends national quartet celebration – all segments honoring the uniquely American a cappella art form.

Based in Nashville, TN, the worldwide Barbershop Harmony Society aims to remind people of the importance of one’s pure voice and the impact it can have on culture and entertainment. They have comprised five ways to celebrate what has evolved into the most diverse collective in the world with thousands of members of different generations, race, religion and sexuality – all together thanks to the sweet sound of harmony.

This Summer, the organization will return to Las Vegas, where they previously sold out five nights at the MGM Grand. The 2017 International competition will be held July 2-9 at The AXIS at Planet Hollywood (capacity 7,000).

    1. Learn.

Trace the historical roots of the barbershop musical form. Classic articles from ‘The Harmonizer’ unfold the origins of close-harmony in African-American communities.

Explore the history of the Barbershop Harmony Society in words and pictures: the early years, the first invitation, and O.C. Cash telling the story on the radio.

Watch and hear the sound evolve in David Wright’s landmark History of Barbershop Class from Harmony University online.

    2. Become a Barbershopper

Whether it’s the Barbershop Harmony Society for men or Sweet Adelines International and Harmony, Inc. for women, there’s probably an opportunity to sing along right in your own backyard. Barbershop has even gone global with affiliate organizations all over the world.

    3. Sing!

If you’re already part of an organized quartet (or larger group), take your show on the road! This is a day to sing out loud and proud, so seize the moment to stage a local performance or a surprise pop-up concert in your community. This could also be a great time to plan an event with your local choruses and quartets - plan a joint rehearsal, throw a tag party, or just get together to celebrate Barbershop.

While you’re at it, take a minute to look around and appreciate the path from 1938 to the present. Honor and listen to the longtime Barbershoppers tell “how it used to be.” Invite your singers to share stories about their Barbershop beginnings.

    4. Share on Social Networks

Tag: #barbershopquartetday –  Post photos of your first quartet, your current quartet, or your favorite quartet picture on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram!

    5. Wear your harmony on your sleeve

  • How to make Paleo Blueberry Crumble for National Ice Cream Day

    image

Cassy Joy Garcia, author of the forthcoming cookbook ‘Fed & Fit’ (August 16th, Victory Belt), uses coconut milk as the base for her Paleo Blueberry Crumble Ice Cream recipe. Surprisingly easy to whip up, the ice cream is swirled with a tart blueberry jam and drool-worthy cashew cookie crumble, making it a paleo-friendly option.

    Ingredients

    Blueberry Jam

2 cups blueberries, frozen or fresh

    2 tablespoons lemon juice

    ¼ teaspoon sea salt

    2 teaspoons honey

    Cashew Cookie Crumble

    1 ½ cup whole cashews

    ½ cup arrowroot

    ¼ teaspoon sea salt

    1/3 cup coconut sugar

    ½ cup butter, melted

    Vanilla Ice Cream

2, 13.5 ounce cans of full-fat coconut milk

    1 teaspoon vanilla extract

    2 tablespoons honey

2 tablespoons gelatin dissolved into ½ cup boiling water

    Directions:

    Blueberry Jam

    - Bring all the ingredients to a simmer in a small to medium-sized sauce pan. Reduce heat, cover, and let it simmer for 30 minutes or until most of the berries have burst and it resembles a jam-like consistency.

    - Pull off heat and let it cool completely.

    Cashew Cookie Crumble

    - Preheat oven to 350 and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.

    - Place the cashews, arrowroot, sea salt, and coconut sugar in a food processor and pulse until the cashews are mostly broken up, but you can still see some chunks.

    - Add the butter and pulse the food processor until it’s pretty evenly combined.

    - Pour the cookie dough out onto the parchment paper and flatten into one large cookie.

    - Bake at 350 for 12-13 minutes, or until it just starts to turn golden brown. Remove from the oven and let it cool completely.

    - Once cooled, break the cookie up into large chunks and set aside.

    Vanilla Ice Cream

    - In your blender, blend the coconut milk, vanilla, honey, and dissolved gelatin together until smooth.

    - Pour the mixture into your ice cream maker frozen bin and follow the manufacturers instructions.

    Combine Blueberry Crumble Ice Cream

    - In a large bowl, add the ice cream to the cooled blueberry jam and broken cashew cookies. Give the mixture 4-5 stirs (or folds) and try to resist over-mixing. Spoon this into a loaf pan and freeze for about 1 hour.

    - From here, you can either serve and enjoy directly or spoon it into small serving bowls.

-If you’re preparing to enjoy at a later time, freeze the small bowls and then about 45 minutes before you plan to enjoy, place them in the refrigerator so that they may soften a bit.

    Yields: 8 to 10 servings

    Total Time: 3 hours

  • Cassy Joy Garcia’s 5 Healthy Eating Tips

Nutrition expert shares tips and food recomendations with
The New Potato in advance of ‘Fed & Fit,’ out July 12:
    http://bit.ly/CassyJoy_TNP_5Principles

    image

At age 24, Cassy Joy Garcia found herself at the crossroads of self-image issues and unhealthy food indulgences. Gaining pounds by the day, she decided it was time to try something she’d never want to do, and go for it, which led to exploring excercise activities and finding a nutritional template that worked for her. She didn’t weigh foods or keep herself on strict diet, yet Garcia developed a plan and little by little eliminated items deemed toxic, dropping 10 dress sizes in a year.

Now, at age 30, Cassy shares insight on how to create your own plan with the publication of her first book 'Fed & Fit: A 28-Day Food & Fitness Plan to Jumpstart Your Life With Over 175 Squeaky-Clean Paleo Recipes’, out July 12 (Victory Belt).

Garcia’s approach is to tackle the issue from all sides: sleep well, hydrate enough, eat healing foods, stay active, and avoid excess exposure to everyday toxins. Most of these strategies are relatively straightforward, but the dietary direction takes more explanation. Check out her five life-changing principles (below).

    Avoid Inflammatory Foods

These common inflammatory ingredients can all sabotage your efforts towards lasting health. While they may be tolerated in small doses, it’s best to avoid them whenever possible.

    Enjoy Healing Foods

Foods can be wonderfully supportive of a healthy lifestyle! While portions do still matter (see #5 below), the foods like non-starchy vegetables, healthy proteins, healthy fats, healthy beverages and fruit are all important categories to enjoy every day. I encourage you to keep things colorful and varied so that you’re taking in a variety of nutrients.

    Think Critically About “Fringe Foods”

There are several Paleo-friendly foods that, although are somewhat natural, may or may not be a healthy addition to your diet. If your goal is to trim down, I recommend either avoiding entirely or enjoying dairy, alcohol and natural sweeteners in moderation for your first 4 weeks.

    Stop Snacking

Though snacking can be a great way to quickly recover from a workout, it’s also an easy avenue to overeating. I highly recommend enjoying three balanced, healthy meals each day and allowing your stomach to empty between. This method will help you truly interpret hunger queues, discern when you’re thirsty (not hungry), and eventually help realign your body’s dependency on regular doses of dietary sugar for energy.

    Stay Mindful of Portions

Though Paleo-friendly foods are healing, it’s important to remember that it is still possible to overeat. I recommend enjoying 4 - 6 ounces of protein, 1 cup of cooked vegetables, ½ cup of starchy vegetable, and 2 tablespoons of a healthy fat at each of your three meals in the day. Of course, adjust these numbers based on your personal constitution, hunger signals, and if you lead an active lifestyle.

  • Paste’s Best of What’s Next: Margo Price

    romithewriter:

The second time I spoke to Margo Price (the first is here), she was ramping up for what would soon become a deluge of TV appearances and publicity events. Did you catch her on Saturday Night Live this past weekend? She was about to again spend a lot of time on the road to promote her debut solo album, Midwest Farmer’s Daughter. So I asked her what it was like spending time away from her 5-year-old son. Price let me know that he has come on several of her tours in the past, while her in-laws—Price is married to her bassist, Jeremy Ivey—have moved to Nashville to care for him when the family is separated.

“It has been hard to realize that I have to spend time away from my son; I never want to do that,” Price told me. “But when I am home I’m with him 100 percent of the time. I try to look at the fact that Loretta Lynn had four children before she made it, Tammy (Wynette) was also a mom, and Emmylou Harris.

But you see men do it all the time and it’s not a question that people would probably ask Sturgill Simpson,” Price continued. “But it’s harder for a mother to be away from home, and I’ve felt judgment from friends, at times. Like, ‘How does it feel to go vacation everywhere and go to Europe and leave your kid at home?’ It’s not always a vacation and it is work.”

The quotes above didn’t make my story, which ran today in Paste

Let me know what you think about Price, who is helping to lead the charge of a new breed of country musicians.
